Rally drivers are much safer than they used to be with modern safety measures. It still surprises me that the driver and his co-pilot walked away from the wreckage of their Ford Fiesta rally car.
The accident happened at the Rally de Catamarca. Nicolas Diaz and his co-driver Luis Allende lost their brakes, which caused they to fly off of the road. After dropping about 8ft off of the road, they then somersaulted and spun through the air for about 5 seconds. When the car came to a halt, it was just a mere pile of scrap metal covered in smoke.
Somehow, Diaz and Allende walked away from the crash. It’s amazing how well the roll cages, seat belts and other safety measures work.
