The American auto industry started off with a bang, and has since slowly lost it’s luster. People say that American cars are created just for the commuter and not for the enthusiast. But there are some American cars that bring back the automotive passion that we so desperately search for. Here is a list of the top 10 American cars picked by duPont REGISTRY’s Facebook followers.

1. Ford GT
The Ford GT is one of the U.S.A.’s first supercars and deserves the term supercar. It is powered by a 5.4-liter supercharged modular V8 and goes 0-60 mph in a stunning 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 212 mph. From 2003-2006 only 4,038 Ford GT’s were produced and to this day are a hot commodity. They are based off of the world famous GT40 racing cars of the 1960s, which were some of the most groundbreaking racecars to date.
2. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
The C6 ZR1 is the most powerful production Corvette ever made. It’s 6.2-liter supercharged V8 pumps out 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque. Also, the C3 Corvette from 1969-1971 and the C4 Corvette from 1990-1995 also had ZR1 models.
3. SRT Viper
Dodge will no longer put their name on the Viper, as SRT is now the official maker of the Viper. The 2013 SRT Viper is quite possibly the most powerful and beautiful Viper to date. At the recent Barrett-Jackson in Orange County, the first 2013 SRT Viper was sold for charity and made a remarkable $300,000.
4. Chevrolet Camaro
The Chevrolet Camaro is a classic pony car that was originally went on sale on September 29, 1966. It was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang and has been doing so ever since it was first placed on the lots. The Camaro has recently received a huge facelift and it’s popularity has grown exponentially.
5. Ford Mustang
In production since April 17, 1964, the Ford Mustang has become synonymous with the American automotive industry. It has gone through many different models since its humble beginnings, with some of them hitting the mark and some missing it completely. The Mustang is expected to receive another facelift in the near future.
6. Shelby Cobra
Even though the Shelby AC Cobra was only in production from 1965-1967, it is still one of the most popular American cars ever. The Shelby Cobra was created after Carroll Shelby mailed AC Cars in England asking them to build him a car modified to fit a V8 engine that was eventually supplied by Ford.
7. Saleen S7
The Saleen S7 is one of the more recent supercars that has been produced in the U.S.A.. It was produced from 2000-2004, and featured a 7.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that could go 0-60mph in a quick 3.3 seconds. From 2005-2009 a twin turbo version of the S7 was produced, conveniently named the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo. This TT version could go 0-60 mph in an astonishing 2.8 seconds.
8. Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger has had quite the odd life, and has skipped many model years. It all began with the 1965 Dodge Charger 273 which was a limited production option package for the Dart GT. It then became it’s own in 1966 with the B-body until 1978. From 1970-1980, they also produced a Brazilian version based on the Dodge Dart. In 198301987 the L-body was created which was a front wheel drive subcompact hatchback. The Charger then went on hiatus until 1999 when a concept was created. In 2006 the Dodge Charger was officially brought back to life and in 2012 received a facelift that brought it back to it’s roots.
9. Cadillac CTS-V
One of the reasons why the Cadillac CTS-V is so well known is because it is powered by a Corvette engine and can actually take corners quite well. It began production in 2004 with a 5.7-liter V8 engine, and then a 6.0-liter V8 until2007 when they stopped production on the CTS-V. Cadillac then brought it back in 2009 with a 6.2-liter V8 that pumps out 556 hp.
10. Dodge Challenger SRT8
The Challenger is another car that has been brought back from the grave. It started production in 1970 to 1974 and then 1978 to 1983. In 2008, the Challenger came back and American automotive fans rejoiced. The most notable model of the new Challengers is the SRT8, which is powered by a 6.1-liter Hemi V8. The 2012 SRT8 pumps out a very respectable 470 hp, bringing back the golden days of muscle cars.
