Fisker Automotive has had a couple bumps in the road, but that’s not going to stop them from continuing to make groundbreaking cars. Their first model, the Fisker Karma, is an amazing electric vehicle and a step in the right direction when it comes to the EV industry. Fisker was kind enough to stop by the duPont REGISTRY headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida and give Tom duPont and the team a close look at the Fisker Karma.
At first glance the Karma is a visually striking vehicle. From its sleek lines and 22″ rims to its fierce headlights, Fisker did a great job on modeling the Karma. Once you get inside the car, the quality still remains. When I asked Tom duPont how he felt when in the driver seat of the Karma he said he was “extraordinarily comfortable.” He also said that the interior design of the car was gorgeous. A lot of planning and meticulous detailing went into the interior design of this car. This is especially noticeable when looking at the continuous interior lines from the front of the car.
Now looks are great and all, but what is really important is how it drives, and the Karma did not disappoint. Fisker let Tom duPont take the Karma out for a spin and he came back with quite the grin on his face. ”It only has one gear, it’s the oddest sensation. I was waiting for a gear change but I just kept accelerating,” said duPont on the single-speed transmission of the Karma. When driving a regular automatic transmission car, you always anticipate the gear change but when in the Fisker Karma, there is no shifting involved as it only has one gear allowing you to accelerate without any lag. The Karma “handles and drives overall like a dream” according to Tom duPont, taking corners very smoothly and taking on the road in a very smooth and comfortable manner.
When talking about an EV, we can’t ignore how the engine is powered. The Fisker Karma is powered by two 120 kW engine that power each of the rear wheels and a when the Sport mode button is pressed, a front mounted turbocharged 260hp, 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder kicks in that sends electricity straight to the drive motors. It’s capable of reaching 60 mph from a standstill in 6.3 seconds, an incredibly feat for an electric coupé.
While some of you may be a bit cautious when it comes to buying an EV, I can safely say that the Fisker Karma may just make you fall in love with the idea of owning an electric vehicle. What I came out with after spending my time with the Karma was that this car was built on the idea of luxury, comfort and style.
