The 2012 Dodge Durango R/T AWD has not changed much from last year because most of the major restyling happened in 2011. Base price for the 2012 model starts out at $37,995 and comes equipped with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 rated at 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, which should be an ample amount of power for this 5,331lb SUV. The power if transmitted through a six-speed automatic transmission which can accelerate from 0-to-60-mph in the low seven second range. The new Durango’s EPA rating is 13 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway and this is fairly typical gas mileage when taking into consideration that it’s a V-8.
The interior of the cabin is spacious and roomy, complete with luxurious leather seats and a lot of standard equipment. The interior was a little plain for our taste but other than that, there is plenty of cabin room. However, we did think it was weird that the R/T package does not come with parking sensors and a rearview camera, although those are available as optional add-ons. The R/T does include amenities such as key-less entry/ignition, automatic headlights, heated outside mirrors, tri-zone automatic climate control, GPS navigation system and voice activated controls, 20-inch alloy wheels, body color accents, xenon headlights and lowered sport suspension. The SUV did not feel bulky and felt pretty nimble, not something you can say about many SUV’s.
The best thing about this SUV and what makes it stand out from the onslaught of SUVs is the magical fun factor. It’s got more than enough power and the acceleration in this thing is phenomenal. It’s got a Hemi and rear independent suspension which means you can have a lot of fun in this thing while having a full car of passengers. Who else can say that? I am betting not that many SUV owners. If you’re looking for an SUV that’s as a comfortable ride, is affordable, and an overall fun vehicle, this one is it!
